All My Bikes: 1

Huffy BMX

Since I have been doing daily drawings for a few years I am always trying to come up with new things to draw. I’ll randomly get ideas and make notes for myself. Today I started making a list of all the bicycles I have owned in my life. That sounds simple enough but I have been bike-crazy for the majority of my life. I have owned A LOT of different bikes. I decided that I will make a drawing about each of the bikes, when I finish them all I’ll make them into a zine—just like I did with the Major Taylor quotes. I’m still going over my list—but it looks like the number is about 29. The list ranges across the spectrum of bicycle styles and types.

Number one isn’t too exciting. Like many kids, my first bike was a department store Huffy BMX bike. For a bicycle enthusiast, I actually learned to ride a lot later than most kids—it’s actually embarrassing. That said, when I did learn to ride I didn’t stop. I remember seeing the BMX movie, Rad and realizing I wasn’t going to get anywhere with a coaster brake! It wasn’t long before I tried to remove it myself. As a young kid I obviously didn’t know what I was doing and ended up with a back hub that randomly slipped. To be honest, I am impressed I actually got it back together!

Who is this guy?

After starting his career as a graphic designer at award-winning studios in New England, Chris accidentally became an illustrator. He’s pretty happy about that. This strange transformation was a result of his daily drawing project that he started in late 2007, in fact he’s still posting a new drawing every day.  Chris holds degrees in Visual Communication Design and Art History from the Hartford Art School at the University of Hartford, where he is currently pursuing his Masters Degree in Illustration. He has been the recipient of Gold Awards, Silver Awards, Excellence Awards, Judge’s Awards and the Spirit of Creativity Award from the Connecticut Art Director’s Club as well as BoNE awards from the AIGA and a Silver Award from Gaphis. In addition his work has been published in numerous books and publications including Print Magazine and Communication Arts. His client list includes; Converse, Nike, Chronicle Publishing, Boston Magazine, McDonalds, Scholastic, Harvard Business School Publishing, Warner Music Group, Republic Records.
