All My Bikes: STA-L

Today I remembered that I never did an “All My Bikes” drawing for my STA-L. Don’t tell my other bikes, but this one is my favorite. It was custom made for me by Standard Byke Co. in Davenport, Iowa! Support companies that make their products here, in the United States.

Standard

Chris Piascik, Standard Byke Co

Last month, I drew all over a Standard Byke Co. STA bicycle frame for the Human Powered Works show in Boston. The magic of Facebook allowed Rick Moliterno, the owner of Standard, to see the photos of the frame. It turned out that he was really into what I had done. This was hugely exciting for me because I have been a big fan of his since the 90′s (for both his riding and products). After some emails back and forth I am now the proud owner of a custom Standard frame—and I couldn’t be anymore stoked. Standard is one of the few manufacturers still producing their products in the USA and I am proud to be riding one of their frames.

All My Bikes: 28, FBM Joint 2

FBM The Joint 2 BMX drawing

This FBM is my current BMX bike and it’s amazing. I love the FBM brand, especially since they build their frames by hand in the USA. That’s a rare thing these days. I caught the documentary about FBM called, “I Love My Bicycle” at the Bicycle Film Festival and it was rad. Afterwards I wanted to go out and buy everything they’ve ever made.

All My Bikes: Flings

bicycle art

I debated not including these 4 bicycles in the series, but then decided it was necessary since the title is “All My Bikes.” I owned each one of these at different points in my life—but there was no real love involved.

Schwinn Sting Ray: I bought this bike randomly at a tagsale, I thought I was going to restore it. It sat in my mom’s basement for a few years when I went off to college. I think it was scrapped at some point.

Haro X24: This Haro Cruiser was an impulse Craigslist buy. I thought a cruiser was going to be a fast and fun way to get around Boston. That may be the case but this tank of a bike was unbelievably heavy and sluggish. I ended up transferring most of the parts over to my Standard 125R Cruiser. The frame went back on Craigslist.

Haro Backtrail: I had the Backtrail during high school for a short time. Now that I think about it, I think I traded my MJ12 for it—ughh what a mistake!

Specialized Rockhopper: Yet another impulse Craigslist purchase. One of the years I was in Boston it was snowing a lot and it was making my relatively long commute slightly difficult. I decided a cheap older mountain bike would be a great bad-weather beater. Meh, not so much. I just put some grippier tires on the Bruiser and called it a day.
