This drawing was inspired by some professional football players standing up in support of gay marriage — I didn’t see this coming. Baltimore Ravens linebacker Brendon Ayanbadejo spoke out in support of a Maryland ballot initiative that would legalize gay marriage. Maryland state delegate Emmett C. Burns Jr. wrote to the Ravens owner asking him to “inhibit such expressions from your employee.” Minnesota Vikings punter Chris Kluwe was angered by this attempt to suppress freedom of speech as well as frustrated with the fact that it’s even a debate as to whether same-sex couples can get married. His frustration led him to write a rather epic letter to the politician (you can read it here).
Here’s a short passage from the letter: “I can assure you that gay people getting married will have zero effect on your life. They won’t come into your house and steal your children. They won’t magically turn you into a lustful cockmonster. They won’t even overthrow the government in an orgy of hedonistic debauchery because all of a sudden they have the same legal rights as the other 90 percent of our population—rights like Social Security benefits, child care tax credits, Family and Medical Leave to take care of loved ones, and COBRA healthcare for spouses and children. You know what having these rights will make gays? Full-fledged American citizens just like everyone else, with the freedom to pursue happiness and all that entails.”
So I ask you, dear viewers, how could I not draw “lustful cockmonster”? I have to say, it’s amazing to see people you wouldn’t expect standing up for same-sex marriage.
