Here is my submission for this week’s Illustration Friday—the theme is “Bottled.” I decided to play off the idea of bottled emotions—namely anger. Grrr!

I was alerted earlier today that another person ripped off my Bieberzig shirt (which is currently sold out). This time, the person: Curt Eichelberger, used my exact drawing. This kind of thing is so frustrating. After some research it seems that he has a history of this kind of thing. I’ve been asked quite a few times if I am planning on reprinting the design—this is one of the reasons I leaning towards retiring it.

I’ve been holding onto a stack of business card size paper samples from my days working at a design studio. I’ve been meaning to do something with them for a while but never got around to it. Now, I’m going to change that!

For $5 I will illustrate any word* on one of these cards and send it to you. Once the stack is gone—that’s it!

I recently stumbled upon a small supply of the now extinct, Print Gocco flash-bulbs. Since I hadn’t been able to make any Gocco prints in quite a while I decided to do three right away. They are now available at the Print Brigade webstore.

I was dissapointed to see the new logo design for the Connecticut Whale. A friend and fellow CT designer, Rich Hollant, perfectly expressed my thoughts:

A mark can be a galvanizing force for a franchise, but it has to encapsulate the essence of that franchise in order to be useful. The Hartford Whalers mark was a stroke of brilliance and as iconic as that red umbrella: it was specific, in that the “W” and “H” worked in perfect harmony and could not be replicated by any team—it only works with the W + H. The new mark approach can work with just about any letter with an open central counter (it’s unclear why the whale would be jumping through the hoop like an Orca—which it isn’t… it’s a blue whale, which is too large for that level of lift and is largely a North Pacific marine mammal. The Connecticut State animal is the Sperm Whale. It looks nothing like this one). The new logo has a touch of whimsy, like the Mighty Ducks, however, the Ducks logo was incredibly clear, memorable and full of personality: (google it!). The current logo comes across as homespun, local, and not committed to a robust merchandising program. The original Cummings & Good logo was created by a bonefide Legend of Connecticut design with a keen sense of how to create a mark that endures, is extendable and considered. Brand and identity design is a very specific discipline. The Whale logo would benefit from a reconsideration by branding experts to get much more mileage out of the mark.

I recently designed this shirt for Get Storied (an education, publishing and communications platform that advises companies, nonprofits, and entrepreneurs on how to get others to believe in their story). The shirt features a jumble of hand-lettered words, each translating to, “storyteller.” These are available now at the Get Storied Merchandise Store.

The remixes of this ridiculous video have had me laughing for a while a now. I can’t stop.
