Renters shouldn’t vote?

tea party says renters shouldn't vote

Recently, Tea Party Nation President, Judson Phillips, proposed taking away the right to vote from people who don’t own property. Is this really the kind of thing Tea Partiers support? Most everything I’ve read seems to be a big mess of contradiction—however this is just down right bullshit.

Here is his actual quote: “The Founding Fathers originally said, they put certain restrictions on who gets the right to vote. It wasn’t you were just a citizen and you got to vote. Some of the restrictions, you know, you obviously would not think about today. But one of those was you had to be a property owner. And that makes a lot of sense, because if you’re a property owner you actually have a vested stake in the community. If you’re not a property owner, you know, I’m sorry but property owners have a little bit more of a vested interest in the community than non-property owners.”

You can listen to it here.
I first read about this on Boing Boing and then Think Progress.

So long as those same folks are the only ones paying taxes as well!

Given the current state of the economy and the rate of foreclosures around the country…unbelievable.

I’m glad there’s someone out there that can give a realistic, honest, and most importantly, unbiased opinion. I learn a lot from you and gladly site you and your website as a good source for information and solid/fair criticism to politicians that sorely need it. I don’t comment often on here, but I do look at your page at least once a day, and sometimes more to see if there are any updates. Thanks for the education and hilarity in all your forms of art and design.

If I do not vote, then I do not pay taxes. It is sad when i am a 40 hour a week, non-hand-out taking American Citizen but I shouldnt vote because I choose not to buy a house.
